You know that it's a hard course when:

- the downhills are equally as hard as the uphills

- there is roughly 1/2 mile of flat in the whole 15.5 mi. course

- 2 GUs are the table stakes

- the cold wind is the least of your worries and the gloves are already off by mile 5

- you try to accelerate on the (hard) downhills in the last few miles and you find that you're just maintaining pace

- you're too worn out to chew the after-race bagel and the apple juice boxes look really appealing - but you can't insert the straw in the box.

Thank goodness for the massage students with tables ready and waiting after the race...much less affected today than I otherwise would have been.

Ken et al:

I got an injury about ten days ago and could not run.  That said,  I watched the guys on the web this morning and was very impressed with the strong performances, especially with the tough weather conditions. CONGRATS to you all!

Boston Rocks!  Anyone who has the priviledge of doing this race should certainly take the opportunity.  Even with weather worse than the city has experienced on race day for 111 years, the crowds were strong and deep and the support was amazing.  I assume all my WTC co-racers will agree.

Congrats to Stan, Don, Kevin and Steve on a job well done!

CONGRATS on everyone who ran Boston yesterday!!  I must say this was the toughest race course I have ever seen.  The Rockies are perfect training ground for the uphills, but it was the downhills that were hard on me.  By the end, my quads were screaming "NO MAS!"  The scream tunnel at Wellesley was the highpoint....did anyone else besides me kiss one of the coeds holding a "kisses for runners" sign??  I agree with Kevin that the race is world class and fun to do.  It has truly earned my respect.

Stan,
It sounds like your race was similar to mine. My quads were starting to hurt at 13 miles and by 16 miles I was done.  The last 10 miles was a very painful shuffle. Not sure if it was my preparation or the Boston course, but yesterday was unquestionably the hardest and most painful marathon I have done.  Highlights include: VERY cute girls at Boston College (significantly cuter than Wellesley in my opinion).  Stopped and talked to James Kelly at the 30K mark (thanks for coming up to support JK).  I think Boston is MUCH better organized than NYCity at the start, but the NYC finish line and post finish line is much better organized than Boston.  AMTRAK is pretty useless -- I suspect it is similar to trains in Siberia.
